16/5/26 - Social Justice or Just Plain Kindness

Social Justice or Just Plain Kindness?

In Matthew 25:34-45 (NRSVUE) we see the following passage that addresses what some I believe would call social justice that could just as easily be called 'just plain kindness':

[34] Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, [35] for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, [36] I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ [37] Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food or thirsty and gave you something to drink? [38] And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you or naked and gave you clothing? [39] And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ [40] And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.’ [41] Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You who are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, [42] for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, [43] I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ [44] Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not take care of you?’ [45] Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’

In this passage we see depicted a few themes, the Day of Judgement, sheep and goats and eternal fire. Sheep and goats are metaphors for God's people and those who are against God. The fire indicates hell and the word eternal in Scripture can also mean an 'age', not necessarily what we mean by 'eternal' as in an unlimited period of time. An age could be a very long period of time. This leaves hope for the redemption of all people even after some have gone through hell as separation from God. I do not personally subscribe to the idea that hell is a literal burning oven or furnace. I do not believe it is necessarily annihilation of the wicked either. I entertain the idea that it is a place of perhaps restoration - restorative justice. It is painful and terrible but not necessarily final. Hell is the consequences of our own unrepented actions while heaven is being in the positive presence of God.

However, the primary theme I believe is applicable to Christians today and those of Jesus's day who claimed to be followers of God. To be followers of God for the Christian today is not just going to Church services twice a year or more, it is not just praying, taking communion or being baptised. These things are very important and essential to one's own relation with God and salvation from alienation from God to one's own selfish desires. However, what is fundamental here and marks out Christians and people of other faiths who have a God conscience is that they help people out. They do good for people, providing for the financially struggling woman fleeing from violence and abuse, giving alms to the homeless individual who has no family to help him, helping the one who struggles with mental health and the social stigmas around it, and feeding the hungry child who is a refugee, and standing up to discrimination and oppression against all those who experience persecution, oppression or discrimination in whatever form because of their identity.

What you do for people in need, you do for Jesus. This is because the blessed Trinity (that is God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) not only loves all people but indwells all things as all things are created by God through Christ. God is in all and all is in God yet they are distinct. If you do good for someone in need out of the kindness of your heart, not for some manipulative gain, be assured because God will remember your kindness. Kindness and social justice go hand in hand if done right. Remember three principles:

Do good out of the kindness of your heart for those who cannot give back. God will see this.

Do not do good to those just to make a name for yourself as God will know the very reason why.

Do good within your means. You can be that means through which God expresses God's love to others.

Love defeats hate.

8/5/26 - Tending the Garden of Eden

In Genesis 2:15-17 (from the NRSVUE translation), The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.

In this text we can find a principle of stewardship and responsibility that can be derived and applied for all Christians and not just Christians but people who are of various faiths too. It is a principle of human and environmental responsibility of making use of it for our purpose while simultaneously protecting it and replenishing what has been taken. But when we talk about making use of something like our environment, we mean anything from eating fruit and vegetables, cutting down trees for paper or wood, to using water for our own use, and also for clearing out land for building perhaps. These things require responsible sustainability. It is a bit like enjoying the fruits of our natural environment but also tending to our environment like replanting trees, recycling and reuse of material. Indeed, our responsibility doesn't end there, we also as humans have a tendency to pollute the environment, whether through carbon, waste that isn't recycled or through production leading to materials or gases being released that harm the environment. I admit I do not know everything about the science involved in environmental sustainability and degredation, I am willing to learn much more about that. Either way I do know that Christians and others have a natural responsibility to stewardship.

Regarding the economy, the market is dynamic and produces what customers demand (supply and demand), so the answer to the question of how we can reduce pollution - therefore preserving our environment - can be acted upon through reducing consumer demand for environmentally depleting materials released. Recycling as much as possible is another way to reduce polution and waste which gets into our seas, etc. These are brief examples of how consumers can do their research to help preserve the environment. Food for thought regarding the biblical mandate to environmental stewardship.

Furthermore, a part of environmental stewardship is protecting animal species from extinction which can be done through activism and petitioning of political parties in office to enact legislation to preserve endangered species if they are not adequetly protected. Even caring for our animal pets and being kind to them could fall into the catagory of stewardship as they are for us to provide loving kindness to while they provide companship, herding support, and possibly guardianship for people on their land, etc.

These are a few ideas on how we can partake in our individual roles of preserving, making responsible use of and tending to our environment and fulfilling our individual roles in stewardship as displayed in Genesis to the best of our abilities.
